Placemaking and Creation of Sustainable Communities

Tackling the placemaking challenges

were pleased to sponsor Insider Magazine's Residential Property Round Table event at the Doubletree at Hilton Hotel Nottingham Gateway with fellow property professionals from across the residential sector.

Chaired by Insider's Business Editor for the Midlands Ian Griffin, it was great to experience a lively, freeflowing discussion about the challenges involved in creating communities and placemaking in new build residential developments.

Featuring delegates from a wide range of residential property-related local businesses including William Davis, Miller Homes Midlands, Omni Developments, Savills, Barratt Homes, Pygott & Crone, Homes England and Nottingham City Council, some of the burning issues of the day included:

  • How much demand is there for creating new residential and new communities?
  • How important is the idea of community building and placemaking in development?
  • How important are shared resources like open spaces, facilities, public transport, health and schools in developing places?
  • How important are mixed tenancies and mixed social groups in placemaking? Should the responsibility and costs lie with developers or local government?
  • How can planners and developers work better together?
  • Where do the developers' responsibilities begin and end?
  • Where do those of local authorities and communities themselves begin and end?
  • How can places be made economically as well as socially sustainable?

The event will be covered in the June edition of Midlands Business Insider, the region's leading business to business publication with a readership of around 41,000.
